The number of possessions a team plays per 40 minutes — measuring how fast or slow a team plays relative to the rest of the league.
Basketball is played in possessions, not minutes. A team that plays 75 possessions per game is operating in a completely different environment than one playing 68. Without knowing pace, you can't interpret almost any counting stat — points, rebounds, assists, turnovers all scale with the number of possessions played. Pace is the foundation that makes all per-possession stats meaningful. It also reveals a team's tactical identity: aggressive transition teams push pace, half-court execution teams slow it down.
In 2025–26, Paris Basketball played the fastest pace in the league at 78.5 possessions per 40 minutes. Maccabi Rapyd Tel Aviv was next at 76.7, followed by Baskonia at 76.6. Fenerbahçe played the slowest at 71.1, with Žalgiris just above at 71.6. The spread across the league is roughly 7 possessions per 40 minutes — which compounds to 10–12 extra possessions per full game for the fastest teams compared to the slowest.
Paris Basketball's 78.5 pace in 2025–26 was the fastest in the EuroLeague — they played roughly 4.4 more possessions per 40 minutes than the league average. Despite finishing 15–23, their breakneck tempo made their games high-scoring spectacles, averaging 90.1 points per game. Compare this to Fenerbahçe, who finished 27–15 at the slowest pace in the league (71.1) — proving once again that deliberate half-court basketball can be just as successful as tempo-pushing.
A fast team isn't necessarily a good offensive team. They might score more points per game simply because they play more possessions. Offensive Rating — points per 100 possessions — is what tells you efficiency. A team with high pace and low Offensive Rating is creating lots of bad possessions. A team with low pace and high Offensive Rating is being selective and effective.
A team averaging 85 points per game might sound poor. But if they play 68 possessions per game at an Offensive Rating of 125, they're actually one of the most efficient offenses in basketball — they just play slowly. Pace is context, not a judgment. Never read a counting stat without knowing the pace behind it.
PACE = Team Possessions / (Team Minutes / 40) × 2
The ×2 accounts for both teams sharing each possession.
