A cut to the basket is a sharp, deliberate movement by an off-ball player toward the rim to receive a pass and finish. It works because defenders can't watch the ball and their man at the same time.
Watch the defender's eyes. The moment X5 turns to look at the ball, the cutting lane opens. Every backdoor basket starts with a defender who lost focus for half a second — the cutter is always reading that. Watch also the passer: the timing of the pass is as important as the cut itself.
In 2024-25, Real Madrid built their half-court offense around constant off-ball movement and cutting. Facundo Campazzo's court vision made him one of the best passers in EuroLeague at hitting cutters — players like Mario Hezonja and Dzanan Musa made backdoor cuts a core part of Madrid's scoring diet. When the defense cheated on Campazzo's drive, the cutter was already gone.
