When a defender leaves their assigned player to stop a more immediate scoring threat — and their teammates rotate to cover the player left open. The difference between a team defense and five individual defenders.
What to watch for
Watch the two defenders furthest from the ball. When a drive happens, do they rotate toward the basket to cover open players, or do they stay attached to their assignments? Elite help defense is a chain of decisions made simultaneously across all five players. A single player who doesn't rotate breaks the entire system.
Stats that answer the question
In 2024-25, Panathinaikos under Ergin Ataman built their defense around elite help rotations — players like Mathias Lessort were willing to leave their assignments to protect the rim, trusting perimeter players to close out on the kick-out. When the system worked, it made their half-court defense nearly impenetrable.
