Alex Mumbru

Alex Mumbru was a long-serving Spanish international and a Bilbao icon before he coached. He led Bilbao and Valencia, then became Germany's national coach in 2024.

In 2026 Virtus Bologna hired him for their new EuroLeague project, while he keeps his role with Germany.

As a player he was a World champion with Spain's golden generation. That pedigree buys him instant respect in any locker room he walks into.

Demanding, direct, strongly competitive. He describes himself as coming from the hard school, and believes teams get tough by training tough.

But he stresses respect and understanding too. His playing years taught him that different personalities need different handling, not just shouting.

Physical, organized basketball. He wants defense, rebounding, and enough structure that possessions do not turn into improvisation.

His offense runs pick-and-rolls, spacing and several creators, but defensive discipline comes first. At Virtus, a club with real offensive tradition, his job is giving that talent a harder competitive edge.
